Architecture

Fine Art |  A Level Project

As a theme for my A-Level Art mock exam, we were given 7 options for a theme for our project. As soon as I saw the architecture option for a choice, I did not think twice! I began by researching different architectural artists who explore the composition of a buildings representation and identity. I studied artists who created their own expression and perception of an architectural structure through the art form. However, I wanted to keep this project personal to me and my interest within architecture, establishing what architecture means to me and what has always grasped my interest from a very young age.

Throughout the project, I practiced architectural practices such as observational and one-point perspective drawings to help understand how buildings can be perceived through different angles. As well as studies into my favourite architects such as Norman Foster and researching his famous pieces, I explored colour palettes within different eras of architecture and researching the role of an architect and how they contribute to society and humanity. This helped to inform my decision to choose between architecture and interior design, but mainly what interested me was finding out how much architects and interior designers influence our day-to-day lives.

Towards the end of the project, I began exploring initial ideas for a final piece after collecting all of the relevant research I needed to offer my project context and meaning. I began exploring with collage using photos of different buildings that sparked my interest the most, but I also began to practice modelling techniques using thick modelling card. I started to model miniature versions of simpler buildings that took my fancy just to practice the technique. Once I began my final piece, I began putting all of the pieces together. I wanted to present a mixed media collage that was personal to me and my passion for architecture.

The final piece consisted of a collage of some of my most well-understood structures, as well as a sketch of my face to make the piece more personal to me. However, I wanted to stretch my grade even further by applying some of my modelling practices to include models within the collage by sticking these to the canvas. The idea behind this was to show 3D models bursting out of the collage, an opportunity to represent some of the foundation skills I’d developed throughout the project.

Project Sketchbook

Below is a selection of pages from my architecture project sketchbook, illustrating the progression of my ideas through research, experimentation, and visual exploration over the course of the project.

“Molly is a conscientious and hardworking student who approaches creative work with maturity and commitment. She is able to manage projects independently, developing sophisticated themes and ideas into well-considered outcomes.

Her practice demonstrates strong technical ability in drawing and printmaking, alongside confident mixed media experimentation and conceptual thinking.

In her current project exploring her father’s OCD, Molly works across both 2D and time-based media, using video to inform abstract printmaking and cataloguing processes. She reflects thoughtfully throughout her projects, using ongoing review to guide decisions and refine her work.

Molly also carries out purposeful primary and secondary research, analysing relevant artists to strengthen her own practice. Her work is consistently thoughtful, well developed, and supported by clear creative intent.”
